The Zelda Timeline Theory
So, what is the Zelda timeline theory? Basically, it's a thesis that explains which order the Zelda games happened. Now we all know that Majora's Mask came after Ocarina of Time, and that The Wind Waker is set a ages after those games - but did A Link to the Past or Link's Awakening come first? Did Oracle of Ages happen before Oracle of seasons (or vise versa)? Well, the timeline theory attempts to make sense of questions such as those.

We probably won't ever know the true, exact timeline theory, since it's very unlikely that Nintendo will reveal it. Miyamoto, while being interviewed with a Nintendo magazine, did state something about the timeline. He said that "Ocarina of Time is the first story, then the original Legend of Zelda, then Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and finally A Link to the Past. It's not very clear where Link's Awakening fits in--it could be anytime after Ocarina of Time". However, he didn't mention the other games, and the fact that he didn't elaborate on anything makes it seem a tad unreliable, but it's worth considering at least.

There are typically many fan theories that have been created by people who have played the Zelda games. By peicing together lots of information found in the games, many people have come up with thier own, unofficial timelines for the Zelda games. I myself haven't figured out my own timeline for the Zelda games since it's an endless debate, really..

.. but I'm sure there are a lot of people who do want to make thier own theories. Here are some important aspects to take in before starting your timeline theory:

· Take in consideration all of the Zelda games. You don't need to take in the awful CD-i games, they don't fit in with the Nintendo/Capcom releases, and besides, they were a joke.
· There is more then one Link and more then one Princess Zelda. You'll have to figure out in which games they origin from.
· You have to have played all the games, and have an extensive knowledge of Zelda.
· Note that your timeline could be disproven by new Zelda game releases.

Any good theories out there?
Obviously, there are many, many fan-created theories. However, you can never be sure as to which one is right, as Nintendo is yet to release an official timeline. In the meanwhile, here's one theory presented by GameTrailers one may find interesting.

The theory supports the multi-timeline theory, in which the timeline splits into two after Ocarina of Time. You can watch the videos about these timelines on youtube.
