The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Hopes were staggeringly high for this after the release of Ocarina of Time. Thankfully, when the game was released, it was an instant classic. Although for many it wasn't quite as good as Ocarina of Time, it was almost there.
Playing as Young Link (for all of the game, this time), you are transported to a mysterious world known as Termina. Link finds out that the land is under threat from a big meteor in the sky, known as 'The Moon of Destruction'. After an encounter with the Skull Kid, who is wearing a mask, Link is turned into a Deku Scrub. After meeting a mask salesman though, he promises Link that he'll turn him back if Link would be so kind as to get his mask back from the skull kid...
