Link’s personality?
Alright, so this is my current dilemma. I want to write a Zelda fan fiction. I have a brilliant idea in mind, but I sort of… blanked out when I began to write about our main characters’ personalities. I’m going to highlight Link because in my opinion, I think he is the most complex of all.
The guy never says a word throughout the games. Seriously, when have you ever heard Link speak? (and I’m not talking about the retarded cartoons). No, and I think that making Link the silent type in the games is what makes him more appealing. I love Link. But when it comes to writing him, then that’s something else entirely. Let’s sit back and ask ourselves this: What is Link’s personality? Okay we know he’s brave and loyal. And that’s it. We don’t know if he’s an outgoing kind of person, or one who prefers to be alone. We don’t know if he’s a cheerful kind of person or a miserable one. We don’t know if he has a sense of humor, or if he has any interest in relationships. We don’t know anything about this guy, so how the heck are we fan fic writers supposed to write him as? How can we make a character ‘canon’ when we are given little details about his personality? Doesn’t this justify the fact that we should be able to write him the way we like, since we have nothing but our imagination to rely on?
Now I’ve read a few fics and I’ve seen all kinds of different personalities for Link. I’ve seen the overly handsome and powerful Gary Sue Link who’s perfect in every way and shares affections for Zelda. I’ve seen the dark Link who seems to have a split personality; one as himself when he’s alone and another for when he’s facing the world. And I’ve even seen a Link with multiple personalities.
So answer me this: How do you see Link as?

You see, the silent protagonist style of Link brings this into play; the makers want you to play the game as if Link is you. Even his name is a pun on this; the link between the character and the player. So the best thing you could do is just write Link using your own personality.

Nintendo said a wolf describes his personality. That's why they used a wolf for Twilight Princess. If you figure out the personality of a wolf, and put it into people form. There you go. I suppose.

A wolf is a silent hunter that loves being around others, never giving up the hunt for his food. So I guess that is part, and a wolf also enforces respect. I can't say that I think of Link being like that, but it is a good idea.

We know that Link is fearless, courageous, heroic, and a relentless fighter.
Also, Link is incredibly generous and kind to others. He is constantly doing things for other people, like gathering their chickens, finding lost items, lost grandchildren, and countless other tasks out of the goodness of his heart. Sure, there's usually a reward for these acts, but we don't really know that until after the task is completed.
Of course, Link also walks into the homes of total strangers and throws jars all over the floor while taking treasure from their chests, so perhaps he's really a total jerk and a thief.

I think Link really IS the strong silent type, but he has a firey and aggressive side to him; this being shown through how a wolf represents his personality. But if you're writing fan fic, you're going to have to make up your own ways to express his personality through his words.

Link is scared out his mind it's just that being under some crazy dude leadership scares link more. Courages defines that he does not scream like a wussy when someone kills him. Or why do you think he sreams when he throws out his sword? People he is not constipated he is scared.

Link doesn't have a personality. The guy's nothing.
