Yeah, seriously people think your emo these days if you just wear a black shirt. It's ridiculous.

seems people pick on the emos just because its easy to do. they have seemingly low self esteem as it is, so what better way to make yourself feel better than to kick a man while he's down? that's not my thinking just the antagonist's perspective.

Scenesters are interesting bunch. I know a lot of midwestern scenesters. Seems like they enjoy the underground culture thing because its the best way to escape the whole boring midwest cultural blackhole, but im guessing NY has it's fair share of them too, since that's close to where Hardxcore started way back in the 80's when it split from punk (i think....have to check that though)

I really shouldn't have laughed at that as much as I did. I'm sorry.

Wow, who knew a topic on emos would have this many comments.
Well to tell you the truth, I think there are two types of emos, and before I continue, yes, I am an emo.
But, pretty much, there are two basic kinds. You have the one who are emo just for the looks and go around cutting themselves because they want attention. These are the ones most people hate and are usually the ones considered poseurs. They are the stereotypical "OMG my bf/gf left me and the whole world hates me now I'm gonna cut my wrist so people will talk to me even though I'm supposed to hate them" People like that are idiots and are hated not just by "normal" people, but by other emos themselves.
The other kind are more along the line of, quiet, reserved, people who enjoy listening to not only emo music, but other kinds of rock and perhaps even different genres of music. We don't go around telling people we cut ourselves, because the few who do, don't do it for show. When one cuts themself, it's because by unleashing a certain amount of pain on one's self, your body releases a set of hormones that dull the pain and get you into a natural high of some sort. It calms you down and can actually feel good. The difference is that you don't mutilate your arm to the point that you'll die, and you don't have to show it to others. Secondly, alot of us don't really whine like people say. We just have our own view of the world and many of us can back our views through intellectual conversations and not through tears and badly worded sentences.
My point here is that, not all emos are bad. Many of them are respectful of other cultures, and while we may be a closed off, introverted group, we're not a bad one. I myself, do not do all of the things a stereotypical emo does. I do dress like them, have their hairstyle and listen to their music (as well as other rock songs), but I don't go around whining about the world, cut my wrist and show my scars at people, and I don't ONLY shop at Hot Topic (A big hint between a poseur and an emo. Poseurs look like a walking advertisement for Hot Topic) We should be left alone because we don't hurt anyone, and while some of us do hurt ourselves, it's not for misery, but because it either helps us, or it feels good. And as long as we respect others, I believe we deserve to be treated well by others as well.

The 'goth' emos I have absolutely no problem with. So they dress in black. So they wear make-up. Big deal, it's just body wear.
The 'wrist-cutter' emos I don't respect. I don't really see the big point in harming oneself for the 'pleasure' of pain, and everytime I see someone at school with scars and cuts on their wrists, I just shake my head and *facepalm*.

I, honestly, don’t really care about stereotypical groups and I would never look down or up at a person based on this “group” or “label” that they wear over their heads. I don’t even like to call troubled people “emos”, as I feel they have more of a name and existence than a title that other people give them.
With the whole thing on “cutting”; I find that as a serious issue and I would NEVER make fun of a person for doing that, even if they are just doing to for attention or they really believe that’s the only way to relieve their pain. That kind of self-mutilation is one of the first steps that lead to suicide, even if the person has no thoughts about doing that at that time or has no intention on doing that. I know many, many people that I hold dear to my heart that have or had some problems with self-mutilation, and some of the things they did make cutting seem like a juvenile attempt of self-mutilation. I even know people who I’m not so close to that harm themselves, including males.
The one thing that drives me nuts is that if someone cuts themselves, they are automatically labeled as an “emo”. I know this boy who actually cuts himself because he gets made fun of all the time for being a bit overweight. I don’t know if he still does, but it isn’t any of my business. Does that make him an “emo”? I also know a girl who is very sweet and pretty, yet she used to cut herself because of serious problems at home. Does that make her an “emo”, too?
But, even if you still go on persisting to bully someone because they’re in a harsh amount of emotional and mental pain that they would actually go to such a level to relieve it, did you ever stop and take a chance to meet the person? I’m friends with a bunch of people, in which some of them call themselves “emo” while others don’t say anything but they are called “emo” by others. (Haha, not all of my friends are “emo”s!) Some of them are really sweet people!
Anyways, I don’t support self-mutilation of social groups, but I also don’t support bullying, either =D

i dont really hate emos, i know some of them just cut to get attention but it doesn't harm me. it's their bodies and they could do what they want, it's like getting a tattoo or piercings.
i mean some of them actually have strong problems at home and cut themselves in a way to escape from certain pain. you wont help an "emo" by bulling them around or making fun of them, that'll make them feel worse.
"Emos" are actually really nice people once you get to know them.
